As a tree is known by its fruit, so repentance is known by good works. These are effects of it, and therefore are proofs or evidences to men of the sincerity of it. The root of true repentance is in the heart. But in vain does a man pretend to have it there, if the fruit of spiritual exercises and of holy performances does not appear in the life.
John Colquhuon, one of the great Scottish preachers of the late 18th and early 19th century, wrote this article to both point out the fallacy of what some called repentance and what true evangelical (saving) repentance was. He did so by listing 10 of the fruits or evidences which should accompany it in a Christian's life. This is definitely one of those "soul-searching" articles which will doubtless lead one to pray unto the Lord for enlightenment and assurance. Read this article here: The Fruits and Evidences of True Repentance. For later reading, you can find this article in "Calvinism and the Reformed Faith" and in the "Soteriology" section. In His service and grace,
simul iustus et peccator
