THERE IS TODAY a renewed interest in the biblical concepts of “reconciliation,” “liberation,” and “renewal.” In many instances this interest carries with it an interpretation of these terms that differs from the traditional one. Whereas numerous churches and religious movements have long understood reconciliation in a strictly personal and religious sense, the focus of attention today is increasingly on the significance of reconciliation of social relationships — in particular political and racial ones.

Although most of us aren't personally exposed to people or groups who redefine "reconciliation", there is nonetheless a definite movement to do this and who focus their interests more on recovering societies rather than upon the reconciliation of individuals with God who are estranged due to sin. Ridderbos wrote this article to deal with his contemporaries, who although no longer around, their ideas have survived them and are being promoted by some today under the banner of "Christianity"; yes, even among some Presbyterian and Reformed churches who claim to be in the historic tradition.

It is important that we, who adhere to the classic doctrines of grace acquaint ourselves with this aberration since it will no doubt become more and more influential in the current state of affairs which the Church finds itself in today.
