When the Reformers were rebelling (and rightly so!) against some errant practices of the Catholic church (e.g., attempting to purchase salvation through the right good works even while living in sin!; monetary payments for forgiveness of sin and without repentance!; etc.; see " http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ninety-Five_Theses " and http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/95_Theses ; and these errant practices show that the Catholic church is merely a denomination run by men), they followed Martin Luther in his surface-level understanding (actually misunderstanding) of such verses as Rom. 1:17 (justification is by "faith") and especially Eph. 2:8-9, where it can APPEAR that Shaul/Paul was teaching that works are not required for salvation (though this is not what he was teaching! The Reformers missed not only "The Hebrew Old Covenant 'Roots'" of Christianity, but also "The Rabbinic Argumentation of Shaul/Paul"! They GREATLY misunderstood Shaul/Paul and YHWH's intended Christianity which should be centered around "The Teachings of Yeshua Jesus"!
