At the present time a number of “conservative” Reformed denominations are drifting theologically toward a dark and uncertain future. The decline is not primarily due to syncretism with culture or blatant ethical violations but rather is rooted in theological subversion from within. This subversion is coming from pastors, writers, popular speakers, seminary professors, and publishers all of whom claim to adhere to the Reformed faith. This situation makes our topic very relevant: Christ’s warning against false teachers. This warning is found in Matthew 16:6: “Then Jesus said to them, ‘Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.’” If we are to avoid making a shipwreck of the faith we must carefully heed this solemn warning from the lips of our Lord. As we study this warning we will consider: (a) the context and preliminary comments; (b) the dangers of false teaching; (c) the nature and manner of doctrinal subversion and (d) ways to stop doctrinal subversion. May God protect us from the leaven of false doctrine and help us to warn others regarding false teachings in religion. This is a most needed antidote in today's religious climate where sound doctrine is looked down upon or even deemed unnecessary in comparison to "relationships", whether it be allegedly with God or our neighbor. Consequently, all manner of unbiblical teachings have been embraced by many of today's churches without much of any resistance. In fact, these false teachings are most always brought into the local church by its pastor(s), who has almost free reign to preach and teach whatever he so desires. And the 'sheep' simply nod their heads and smile, never questioning if what they heard was biblically sound and true. Deviant practices always flow from aberrant doctrine. But rarely do the members of a church ever bother to look behind a practice to see its source. One has to wonder if the allowance of false doctrine and practice basically happens because there is widespread agreement within the churches' membership? The author of this month's Article of the Month, Brian Schwertley was concerned enough to write this article of warning and remedy because of the current situation which is going on in "Reformed" churches. History is without question repeating itself once again. One has to wonder... I certainly do, if anyone REALLY learns from history so that the errors of the past aren't made again. Unfortunately, they do and they are being made even at this very moment. Of course, the big question that everyone needs to ask themselves is, "Am I allowing or even promoting false doctrine and/or practice? Or, am I one of the rare ones who oppose and fight against it?". You can read this article here: Christ's Warning Concerning False Teachers. Or, you can always find it in the Article of the Month section on the main webpage. In His service and grace,
simul iustus et peccator
