Can someone please give me a fairly brief description on the differences between these two eschatological positions?

I know that Dispensational Premillenialism didn't come on the scene until around 1830. However, I have an eschatology book on the various positions, but it makes no distinctions between these views.

I have a friend who claims to be a premillennialist, but he didn't even know that there were two positions in the premillenialist camp.

I also have another related question. My friend told me that he could never become an amillenialist because he sees no evidence that we are in the millennian, even if it were not a literal 1000 years.
I am not up on the issue enough to give an answer one way or another, but how would an amillenialist respond to that?

Sorry if I have any spelling or grammar mistakes, my spell check is giving me problems.
