“Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he” (Genesis 6:22).

We should be willing to engage in and go through great undertakings, in order to our own salvation.

I. There is a work or business which must be undertaken and accomplished by men, if they would be saved.
II. This business is a great undertaking.
III. Men should be willing to enter upon and go through this undertaking though it be great, seeing it is for their own salvation.
Those who chose to read this sermon by Jonathan Edwards, one of the most recognized Christian scholars of America, perhaps in the entire world, will quickly see that what Edwards believed, taught and preached is antithetical to the vast majority of what is believed today and is being taught and preached in the majority of modern pulpits. It is unheard of to think that a person must spend time seeking God and finding the salvation of his/her soul after exerting much effort. Why, today it is said all one need do is "ask Jesus into their heart", or read the 'Sinner's Prayer' on the back of a church business card, or go forward to the 'altar' to receive Jesus, etc., etc. ad nauseam. Salvation today is like much of everything else we want.... instantaneous, self-induced, which is guaranteed to give one self-gratification. So, which is it? Is Jonathan Edwards correct in his understanding of biblical teaching concerning Spirit-wrought salvation, or is the modern concept of obtaining salvation what the Bible teaches?

The answer, of course, is crucial for it determines what one should believe, teach and/or teach. And, on a more personal level, it determines whether one truly has come to know the salvation God has foreordained and providentially brings to pass in a sinner's life in His good and perfect time. One is the lie of the Evil One and one is truth. Read this sermon, therefore prayerfully and ask that God reveal the truth to your mind, heart and soul.
