Just a personal note re: Dr. Elliott's reference to Cornelius Van Til where he wrote concerning him:
Some postmodernist theologians deny that the Bible is the actual Word of God. Twentieth-century theologian Cornelius Van Til, for example, said that the Bible contains a system of "truth" that is "at no point identical with" but somehow resembles the unknowable truth in God's mind.
I do not appreciate nor agree with Dr. Elliott's statement about referring to Dr. Van Til as a "postmodern theologian", which would be typically a pejorative term of someone who is theologically very unbiblical in their views. And secondly, I do not believe that Dr. Elliott's assessment of Van Til's words as found in the foreward of Dr. B.B. Warfield's book
The Inspiration and Authority of the Bible to be accurate. I had the distinctive pleasure of knowing Dr. Van Til and spent some time going on leisure walks with him about campus where we discussed myriad subjects of both biblical, theological and of personal things. Never did Dr. Van Til tell me nor even hint that which Dr. Elliot wrote of his understanding of Van Til's views concerning the nature of Scripture. In fact, one one reads the actual content of that foreword in context, both fore and after page 33, then it seems to me that Van Til held to an extremely high view of Scripture in from every perspective. My opinion is that Dr. Elliott whom I have a very high regard and often recommend his writings and broadcasts comes from his affinity with the writings of Dr. Gordon Clark. Dr. Clark and Dr. Van Til have been unfortunately known to have some serious and hot debates over a few matters of Christian theology. This is one area of debate which they opposed their respective views.
Bottom line: Do NOT conclude that Dr. Cornelius Van Til held to a low view nor defective view of Scripture. Nor, should Dr. Van Til be thought of heretical on this matter. He was a giant of the faith, albeit a man and not infallible, and should be looked upon as a reliable defender of the faith that was once delivered unto the faith. I can confidentially say the same for Dr. Paul M. Elliott and only wish that there were more godly men like him in our day.
