I know job seems kinda crass in conjunction with Elders and Deacons, so pardon the wording. However, how do the responsibilities of the two offices differ, and is the office of Deacon somewhat subordinant to the office of Elder. I know what they are in general terms, but I'm speaking of something in detail.

The Elders oversee the church in all areas of the church life, especially in terms of the spiritual life of the church. They must be able to teach. They examine and approve all nominated officers for congregational selections. They oversee the work of the Deacons.

The Deacons perform the work of service in the church. Most think of them as handling the church finances and maintaining the church property, yet the Elders have final say-so in those areas as well. The work of service is much wider than the above, but I cannot really explain it well.

In some chuches the two offices are more autonomous to each another, but the ones I'm familiar with are not. For instance, some let the Deacons develop and approve the budget; others let the Deacons develop the budget but the Elders have authority to change any line item and ultimate final approval of it.

Any thoughts on this?
