I was wondering who peoples favorite modern preachers are today? I like listening to John Piper, John Macarthur, Rick Atchely and Chris Seidman.

Dear Vince

Generically speaking I am not a big fan of modern day, shiny paper writing hair spray type preachers who preach a kindler and gentler Calvinism.

So I would have to say that my favorite Internet preacher at this time in my life is Rev. Angus Stewart he's also an excellent debater.

Hear Rev. Stewart HERE

I guess you and me are the only people who listen to preaching on the internet, I think the rest are out bowling.

Vince,

I must admit that when you ask for a list of favorite modern preachers I'm limited in those I've been privileged to hear. However, I have read many books and some of them are by the preachers you've listed. In your opinion what are the qualities of a good preacher? Why have you chosen John Piper, John Macarthur, Rick Atchely and Chris Seidman?

I consider anyone who preaches the Gospel of Jesus Christ worthy of listening to. Specifically they teach that:

We have all sinned against Gods law.

This sin demands our eternal punishment in hell.

Nothing we do is good apart from God.

To be saved we must understand our sin rightly.

Repent of our sin.

Ask Jesus for forgiveness, a process that takes time. It is not just saying a prayer or doing a ritual. You must understand our condition before God and ask forgiveness because you are heartbroken at what Jesus did for you.

You must beleive that Jesus is God.

They also teach how we know we are saved. (1John)

Our works flow out of our love for God, not becasue he saved us from hell.

Thanks, I will give him a listen.

I also like Paul Washer.

To be quite honest, is this really how it should be in the Church of Christ, ie that there are favorite preachers and others that are not favorites? I am not refering to a comparison between preachers that preach the true Gospel and those that are false teachers and who preaches some other gospel. It certainly is true that some preachers are better orators than others and that on the ear they are perhaps more pleasant to listen to. But I also recently had the experience to listen to the sermon of a retired pastor who definitely is not a good speaker. The substance of the sermon was so deep that after the service my son spontaneously remarked on it.

Although perhaps not directly in the context of Vince's question I would like to point to 1 Corinthians 1:
Quote
11For it has been reported to me by Chloe’s people that there is quarreling among you, my brothers. 12What I mean is that each one of you says, "I follow Paul," or "I follow Apollos," or "I follow Cephas," or "I follow Christ." 13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul?

Without us sometimes realizing it we can develop an "I follow John MacArthur" or an "I follow John Piper" attitude if we practice some kind of favoritism with regard to preachers. God calls preachers and He sends them to preach the Gospel to whom He wants. Some of them are gifted speakers, others not. We are not to practice any kind of favoritism on the basis of the gifts that God alone gave each of them! Let us therefore not practice favoritism in the Church of Christ.

Vince, sorry if I am dumping cold water on you!

I understand your concern. This post was an attempt to see if there were other preachers out there that I could listen to and did not know of. I follow Jesus and no other and try to listen to different preachers as best I can. I also know that I do have some favorite ones, ones I know teach the bible.

Johan,

I believe your "admonition" is misplaced. Each speaker or teacher naturally "clicks" with certain individuals for various reasons and therefore becomes the favorite. As such, each has his place in God's kingdom. No one here is saying that their favorite is the "ultimate" to the exclusion of all others.

Well sorry to burst your bubble my friend but I too listen to preachers on the internet mainly via podcasts which I will list now: White Horse Inn; Renewing Your Mind with R.C. Sproul; and Grace Life Pulpit Podcast. These keep me pretty busy and occupy my mind while I am traveling on the bus. I had more pastors I used to listen to but I found I could never get them all listened before the next one appeared. A lot of space was taken up on my hard drive that wasn't used. So I limit myself to three with special broadcasts as I find them.

Machaira,

You may be right that my admonition is misplaced.

Your theory of "natural clicking" however leaves me feeling very uneasy. Pehaps you should think a bit about the consequences of that theory.
