GOD BE MERCIFUL TO ME A SINNER

God's people are never in a more thriving state of soul than when they are carrying the cross. It is the delight of the Holy Spirit to pull down the pride of self and to build up the glory of free grace. The lightest feather of affliction that can be laid on the back of our patience will break us down if God's Spirit is not by to support us. Christ's righteousness is the only worthiness of a sinner. I hope it will be my prayer when I come to die (and I am sure it will if I am then in my senses), “God be merciful to me, a sinner.”—William Romaine.
