“What is providence? God does everything for my sake because of Christ! …… If it rains, it is for you and God’s people. If there is inflation, recession, prosperity or difficulty it is God doing things for his people. If there is war or a political crisis in the world, it is the result of God opening his fatherly hand in concern for his children, for me, his covenantal child. Do you believe everything happens in this world for the sake of God’s purposes with his church? A star fades, the wind blows, then disease strikes in all these things and God is speaking to his children saying, Look here I am, your heavenly Father with my open hand and heart. The sun shines, the earth turns, the planets follow their courses, food gives out, news conferences are held, earthquakes occur – each new joy, every new sorrow, grief or anxiety means the Father’s hand is caring for his children.

The wise man is the one who in the critical circumstances and situations in life confesses his trust in the mercy of the Lord. This is the only way to view life according to the Bible. That is literal and practical.”

Excerpts from “That Christ May Dwell In Your Hearts – Sermons on the Heidelberg Catechism Lord’s Days I-XX,” C. Eric Fennema, Published by Mid-America Reformed Seminary, 1988, Pgs. 92-93.
