The term world does not always have the same meaning. It can properly be used in a considerable variety of senses. In distinction from the Christian church it is “the ungodly multitude, the mass of men alienated from God and therefore hostile to the cause of Christ.” The term antithesis denotes “a strong contrast, the direct contrary.” It hardly needs to be argued that, the stronger the contrast of the church and the world, the greater is the glory of the church. White never seems quite so white as when it is seen against a black background. So the holiness and beauty of the church of Christ stand out most strikingly when contrasted with the filthiness and depravity of the world.
How apropos this Article of the Month for July is when you look at the modern visible church, which continues to conform itself to the world in order to allegedly attract people which otherwise wouldn't even think about setting foot in a church building. Others have written of the fallacy of this and how dishonoring it is to God, never mind a direct violation of what God has written in His inspired, infallible Word concerning the nature and life of the Church.
Thus, this month we have a clear reminder that there is a vast gulf that should exist between the true Church which the Lord Christ purchased with His own blood, and the world which is at enmity with God and His Son who sits on the throne at the Father's right hand ruling over all things.
