Dr. Paul Elliott is providing several series on the website, Teaching the Word Ministries taken from A.W. Pink's Studies in the Scriptures which the Banner of Truth reproduced as Profiting From the Word. I personally have greatly benefited and been invaluably blessed by Pink's writings and encourage everyone to gain access to them in whatever form. What motivated me to include 5 sections from this series is past and present experiences. Presently, as I have sometimes mentioned in posts here, there is much "god-talk" that can be heard on conservative news outlets and organizations which speak of God but mostly in regard to external things, e.g., how He helps with problems, sorrows, financial woes, persecution, feeding the poor, etc. Basically, what is being shared and taught is if you just believe in God, all your problems will be taken care of. I often call this the "Celestial Bell-Hop Syndrome". This type of mentality and belief system is universal among so-called Christians and even some non-Christian religions. But what is sorely missing from all these beliefs is the fundamentals of the faith, although some of them are given a brief acknowledgement but nothing more. Sandemanianism (aka: Easy Believism) is still dominant today. Just give a verbal assent to the fact that Jesus died and rose from the dead and died for 'my sins' because I've made some bad judgements or mistakes in my life, find a church and you are 'saved'. Okay, so there was one particular experience I had when studying at a conservative seminary that I really want to share because it demonstrates the matter which Pink brings to light in the series that is the Article of the Month for February. It was during one of the regular morning chapel services when one of the main leaders of the sponsoring denomination spoke and asked a rhetorical question, "What do you see when you are at the mall?" He then answered the question by saying loudly, "I'll tell you what you see... REPROBATES, you see REPROBATES!!" The Spirit suddenly pierced my heart and moved me to stand up before everyone and quote the Apostle Paul's words which he spoke in Corinth: "1 Corinthians 1:26-31 (ASV) 26 For behold your calling, brethren, that not many wise after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, [are called]: 27 but God chose the foolish things of the world, that he might put to shame them that are wise; and God chose the weak things of the world, that he might put to shame the things that are strong; 28 and the base things of the world, and the things that are despised, did God choose, [yea] and the things that are not, that he might bring to nought the things that are: 29 that no flesh should glory before God. 30 But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who was made unto us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption: 31 that, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord." My first thought was who "I" was when God visited me sitting at a desk. I was an atheist who hated God and lived a life of infinite and unbridled sinfulness. "I" was one of those "reprobates" who occupy the mall that this proud man denigrated. He, of all people, being one of the head men of a Reformed denomination should be personally knowledgeable of the doctrine of sin and total depravity and the power of God that comes through the Gospel of Christ to resurrect the dead and make them children of the Living God. Spiritual pride can be a deadly sin no less than any other sin. So with these words, I have thought it good to share Pink's godly wisdom given to him from his studies in the Scriptures in this month's Article of the Month. You can read the article now by clicking here: Studies in the Scriptures - Profiting From the Word Or for later reading, visit The Highway website and click on the Article of the Month logo. There you will see this month's Article of the Month and all past Articles of the Month. In His service and grace,
simul iustus et peccator
