If a humble man becomes proud of his humility, he loses the very humility he claims to possess and becomes puffed up with pride. If a man takes pride in his beauty, he forfeits true beauty and becomes a vain fool. If a man is proud of his wisdom, he turns into a fool; if he boasts of his wit, he becomes as senseless as a donkey. If he is proud of his poverty, he becomes rich only in pride; if he is proud of his riches, he becomes poor in piety. What a terrible and hateful sin pride is! Not only is it evil in itself, but it also corrupts good things, turning them into evil. Just as thunder is said to sour good drink, and as venomous creatures transform whatever they consume into poison, so pride turns all the thoughts, words, and deeds of a proud man into instruments of vanity and self-glorification.
