The salvation of our children is priceless; their spiritual needs far outweigh their physical needs. They need our prayers—our earnest prayers with hearts aflame, both for their initial repentance and coming to Christ by faith, and for their life of ongoing growth in faith. Matthew Henry rightly declared that it is of far more value for parents who die to leave behind a treasury of prayers for their children than it is to leave behind a treasury of silver and gold.
Parents are too often and rightly concerned for their childrens welfare but unfortunately this is restricted to earthly needs; food, clothing, protection etc. But the most important need is that these precious ones be made right with God. Parents are also to take the responsibility of being 'guardians of their souls'. Dr. Beeke stresses this necessity in detail in this month's Article of the Month and focuses upon that available means to that end in praying for their souls. Some believing parents make the unfortunate mistake in
presuming the salvation of their covenant children upon false traditions, erroneous teachings, or faulty interpretations of selected biblical texts. In doing so, their children are not given proper teaching concerning their natural state nor pointing them to the need they have to repent of their sins/sinfulness and believing upon the Lord Jesus Christ for the remission of their sins, thus being united to Christ and being made right with God in justification. Only in this way can they be encouraged to live a godly and holy life in this world. Justification needs to proceed Sanctification. Moralism doesn't equate to true godliness for the heart is bypassed which needs reconciliation first and foremost.
It is hoped that all current parents and expecting parents will read this article and benefit from Dr. Beeke's godly and biblical wisdom to the salvation of their children.
