I know some here will be interested in seeing this. It is a 17 page document drafted by OPC elders and is an overture on Justification.

http://www.graceopc.net/Resources_Pages/Justification.htm

Susan

Susan,

I was pleased with the Overture overall. However, I found it to speak a little too lightly in regard to the matter addressed; i.e., "Justification by Faith Alone" (aka: Sola Fide) by presenting the issue as one of confusion at this time. I would have preferred they wrote more directly and called "a spade a spade", e.g., making it clear that the Kinnard case was one of serious heresy and not simply confusion.

There was another overture made by a N. J. OPC that deals with the teachings of Norman Shepherd. I don't understand the workings of the OPC Gov't but think any congregation can make an overture. Perhaps there will be other elders who will deal with this the way you suggested. It is a good start and hopefully this will be dealt with now.
Susan,

I found the Overture by the N.J. Presbytery more to my liking! [Linked Image] Thanks for posting it for us to read.

Susan,

I think Dr. Cornelis Venema does a good job of critiquing Norman Shepherd's book The Call of Grace which has been out for some time now.

Hello Pilgrim,

How much of the Kinnaird case are you aware of? It happened in my presbytery and i attended a couple of those presbytery meetings in which the matter was either directly or indirectly dealt with. I'm pretty confident that the OPC GA made the right call on the particulars of the case. I had, at one time, the full context of the three quotes used in the trial itself.

Jimbo,

I have read one Pastor's "summary notes", which were quite detailed, of the proceedings along with other matters considered at that GA. If what he wrote was accurate, then I would have to say that the GA erred and didn't properly deal with Kinnaird as they should. Of course, I am solidly convinced that Kinnaird, but especially Norman Shepherd are teaching heresy, re: Justification by Faith.

I had many discussions with Mr. Kinnaird and actually came to his defense on a couple of occassions in certain circles. He attends a church in my local presbytery. In any case, one elder who opposed Kinnaird sought me out in order that we might spend some time one afternoon over this very matter. As a result of that afternoon, this individual became partially persuaded by what I had to say. He asked that I put my thoughts from our meeting down on paper, which is what I have attached for your reading. I am still tired from the ordeal, so I would like to reserve the right to not correspond over the matter.

In His Kindness,

Ron

I read Shepherds book a couple of years ago and thought it was good.

It is recommended by R J Gore, Joel Nederhood, Roger S Greenway and Richard B Gaffin Jr.

The book was recommended to me by a deacon of the OPC in Castro CA.
