I followed the instructions on uploading a userpic (avatar) and it is not displayed with any of my posts. What am I doing wrong? I am using a Highway supplied picture.

Fredman did you use the "Use a stock avatar" setting or another? (located under "My Home" >> "Personal information, email, password, etc").
Posted By: fredman Re: Userpics - Fri Jan 02, 2004 1:27 PM
Yes, I did click the "use a stock avatar".
Also, I did not receive an email notification of your response to my post in my personal email box here at work.

Fredman,

If you want an email reply to your posts just click the "Make this a favorite thread" box at the bottom of your post when you submit it.

Thanks for the email info.
Now, any thoughts as to why my userpic is not being displayed with my recent posts?

https://www.the-highway.com/forum/images/avatars/calvinbu.gif This is the user pic that is presently chosen and showing up in your profile. Which one do you desire to show up?
Posted By: fredman Re: Userpics - Fri Jan 02, 2004 3:11 PM
Yes,
that is the one I want to show up, but I understood that it would also appear along the side if my name on the main posting boards when I reply to any message. Am I mistaken about that?

For it to show up next to your name (like my Tulip pic below) you also need to put a link (the one in my previous post) in this section: "Signature (up to 200 characters). You may use UBBCode in your signature."

Thank Joe,
I finally got it to work, but I don't understand why, if I click which userpic I want from the stock, it doesn't show up automatically? Why all the run around putting links into the signature box with the words [image] at the beginning and end of the URL? All the other discussion boards I frequent allow for me to choose a picture, I click it, and anytime I post it will show up no matter what.

I am glad it is working. Here you have the option of putting a different picture(s) and not just one. Your signature can have more than just a pic, i.e. your name, a phrase, and so forth (see mine below). It is simpler IMHO to accomplish this with the settings we have. Pilgrim I am sure though will look into your question in case an improvement may be made.

I am not so much in need of simple, just clarity. It may be helpful to explain to the new folks wanting to add a userpic to their name what you explained to me. I was under the impression that if you just clicked the picture that it was automatic. I was totally unaware of needing to put the link in the signature box with [image] at the beginning and end of the URL. You may wish to tell folks that IF they want the picture to appear with the posts, to do what you told me. Make sense?

Fred,

I think you are confusing "Avatar/Userpic" with "Signature". They are totally different things. Currently we provide 3 ways in which a member can add an "Avatar" (aka: userpic) to be displayed beneath their username and which appears on the left beside their posts. They can either upload an image from their own computer's hard drive, upload one from the Internet by providing an URL, or they can choose one of our own pre-supplied, pre-made Avatars.

There is no provision to add an image to your Signature line, other than doing it manually with the UBBT Code's image tags, which is displayed at the bottom of the actual message itself. Yes, there are some Forum's software which do provide a way to add images to signatures like we have for "Avatars/Userpics". But we don't have that.... yet! <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> Perhaps in the future, we can add a simple way to add an image to your signature line.

(Fred) No, I don't believe I am. When I initally asked about the avatars, my question had to do with the one I had chosen NOT displaying in my postings. It displayed on my home page under all of my information, but when I posted, it would not display. Wes or Joe reviewed the steps for me to have my avatar displayed, which I had previously done, and then re-set just to make sure, and still no avatar under my name when I posted. Joe then mentioned about the signature stuff, and then when I made the avatar link with a part of my signature line, surrounded by [image] it appeared at the bottom of my post. I then thought that is what was suppose to happen with the avatars, but now you are telling me I am confused (which is an understatement). At any rate, back to my original question then: Why is my avatar NOT displaying under my posting name when I post? I believe I have performed all the necessary set-ups, yet there is still no avatar.

Fredman when I answered your initial post your avatar was displayed under your name in the "left side" of the post under your user name. Thus, I asked you which avatar you desired displayed (because one was already there). This is when I found out you were speaking of your "signature block" and not the avatar section.

Your avatar and signature block are BOTH showing up at this time. Sign out, clear your cache, sign back in if you are not presently seeing them. We are seeing them!

Geesh,
So what your are saying is that everyone else can see it, except for me? That is weird... now I feel stupid. At any rate, why would I not see it and everyone else would?

Fred,

I think you need to either clear your browser's "cache"; ask if you need destructions. Or, you could go to "My Home" and at the very bottom of the page there is a link that says, "My Cookies". Click that and follow the prompts.

And just we both know we are on the same page, <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/giggle.gif" alt="" />, I took a screenshot of your Username and Avatar as it appears on the left of the message I am replying to.

I am not a computer geek, but at times I understand the cache gets stuck (for lack of a better term) and it just needs to be deleted and then reloaded, which is automatic when you come back to a page.

Thanks for the Info Pil,
I did what you stated, cleared my cookies, reset everything, and logged back in. I will see if it will work, meaning, if I will be able to see my avatar on my own computer when I view my posts. If not, I guess I will have to live with it and trust in faith that everyone else can see what I can't.

Fred,
Can you see it if you log out, the way a non-member would see it?

No, I can't. I may never get to the bottom of this mystery.

Fred,

Okay.... [Linked Image]

Can you splain this to me again... what EXACTLY is it you are not able to do, see, or whatever? <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> I thought that the "Avatar" issue was resolved and that you could see your own Avatar displayed under your username? You can see everyone else's right?

I think I may have it figured out. I was tooling around my user page, and I think I clicked the proper buttons and all, and it seems to be working.
Please keep in mind, I am a theologian, and when it comes to computer stuff, even doing something as simple as fixing my personal homepage on a posting board, I am like superman in the presence of Kryptonite.
