Nominated For Every Best Musical Award Of The Season, Including The Tony Award

Broadway Premiere Of Critically Heralded Musical

A celebration of the human capacity for caring even in the midst of unthinkable misfortune is the inspirational new musical titled Come from Away. The work of married Canadian collaborators David Hein and Irene Snakoff, Come from Away takes place in the far-flung locale of Gander, Newfoundland, the unlikely spot where passengers from 38 aircraft were stranded on September 11, 2001. Taken from voluminous interviews conducted with the air travelers as well as with local residents, the musical examines the ways in which the small town welcomed and comforted the legions of guests it never expected to receive.

Debuting in 2015 at the La Jolla Playhouse in the San Diego area, Come from Away eventually moved on to the Rep Theatre in Seattle, setting new records at the box office and ultimately being extended due to overwhelming public demand. The production taking place on Broadway has received seven Tony nominations, including those for Best Book of a Musical and Best Musical.

Key Plot Points of Come from Away

Once the full picture of what was happening began to unfold on September 11 of 2001, airspace over the United States was closed, forcing thousands of commercial and other aircraft to land or remain grounded. A total of 38 such planes were ordered to come to ground in Gander, Newfoundland, population 9,000.

The musical Come from Away tells the story of a particular group of travelers from one such plane and the small town residents who hosted them in their own homes. The range of personalities profiled is wonderfully varied and includes a pair of gay romantic partners both named Colin, the first woman pilot employed by American Airlines, as well as chef hailing from Egypt, whose early concerns about how he might be perceived ultimately proved unwarranted. The interplay of these personal stories works to create a hopeful vision of human potential in the face of great trauma.

The Broadway version of Come from Away has recently garnered an array of Best Musical nominations, including the Tony Award nod.

Come from Away is a New York Times Critics' Pick and transports theatergoers to a small Newfoundland town where a diverse set of personalities and sensibilities were thrown together in a time of chaos to merge into an affirming portrait of friendship and mutual understanding.
