Thanks for the article.
I do know that one argument of these “Bible believing egalitarian (to throw another word in there) liberals”, is to say that the context of verses used by many conservative Christians is wrong.
For instance, concerning 1Peter 3:1, they believe that the context is not only women being in submission to their husbands, but both being in submission to each other and to God.
This is from a sermon I heard quite a while back; unfortunately I can’t remember any of the other details in this sermon.

The church will continue to reform according to the Word of God but change for change sake only satisfies a cultural shift and soon grows old.

Todd Wilken quoted Mike Horton who wrote about “the practical denial” of Scripture.

"While evangelicals and other conservative Protestants hold to a high doctrine of Scripture in principle, the last two decades have especially seen a growing disregard for making their sermons expositions of Scripture; rather, it's often the case that the Bible is used as a sourcebook of quotations for what we really want to say."

I think we've all seen this happen at one time or another when a pastor tries to make "his views" known and only uses the scripture text to satisfy the requirements in a worship service or to introduce a subject. This is often the problem with topical preaching versus exegetical preaching.

I think the author sums up his article about Bible believing liberals quite well with this quote:

Quote
Do Bible-believing liberals realize how liberal they really are? No. Are they well intentioned? Certainly! But the some of the old-line liberals were well intentioned too. St. Bernard of Clairvaux said, “Hell is full of good intentions.”
