I am posting this because in the past I have seen a lot of articles by John Armstrong as well as positive feed back about him on the Highway.
It is for that reason why I am submitting the following link for feed back.

http://pub54.ezboard.com/fdiscussingreformationfrm1.showMessage?topicID=300.topic

Tom
Tom,

So, what are you trying to say with your providing the link to the two parts of Armstrong's 3-Part series? I understand the two positions. And, I seem to surmise that Dr. Armstrong is siding with those missionaries who refuse to sign the statement of 2000. It would appear that you are questioning John Armstrong as being "conservative" due to his stand on this particular issue. Have I understood you right? If I am correct, then how would you like Dr. Armstrong to be classified if not conservative? That is ALL I am wondering at this point and see no expediency in commenting upon the issue which is the center of this situation in the SBC.

In His Grace,

First of all, how much do you know about the issue? The site you mentioned only goes into the whole issue very briefly, and it does not tell about how the present leadership is indeed conservative and complementarian. There is a group called the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship (CBF) that is egalitarian and liberal (they are errantists and tend toward inclusivism and open theism). They call themselves moderates, but I call them liberal. I've been a Southern Baptist officially since 2000, and I was unfortunately first introduced to the controversy through the viewpoint of the CBF. They call it the "fundamentalist takeover" but I call it "the return to the Bible!"

If you want, I can post a few books on the subject.

True godliness is a sincere feeling which loves God as Father as much as it fears and reverences Him as Lord, embraces His righteousness, and dreads offending Him worse than death~ Calvin

Pilgrim

No I am not questioning Armstrong on being a conservative, but I was quite surprised by what he said.
I thought that maybe some people, who knew him better than me, might be able to shed a little more light on him.

As I think about the matter more though, there are some issues that I disagree with noted people such as CH Spurgeon on.
For instance, Spurgeon's belief that if a baby dies, they immediately go to heaven.

Tom

Tom remind me again are you a member of the Southern Baptist Church? Do you agree with the Baptist Faith and Message? See it here

Do you in fact consider yourself a Baptist?

I have read about this topic in the secular media. It really causes me no real harm. I refer you to a missionary I know who was turned down by the first mission organization that he applied to because who had devorced before he was a believer. When I met him he was involved in a vibrant ministry in the Ukraine. I was a teacher at a descipleship camp in Dec 2001-January 2002. Ask me about New Years Eve in the Ukraine.

I don't agree with everything in it, and I am Southern Baptist as well. I think some of it is a deviation from the original beliefs of the SB's, and that bothers me and is therefore full of contradictions and such.
Linda

It will take me a while to find that quote from Spurgeon, but I am almost certain that I found that on the Highway.
This is something that many Baptists such as John MacArthur would also say.

Tom

So let me get this straight you are a member of the Southern Baptist Denomination but you don't hold to the current Baptist Faith and Message. Why is it you stay with the denomination again? I am Canadian and as far as I am aware of (though I could be wrong) there are no SBC Churches in Canada.

But to answer your question, about me concidering myself a Baptist. Yes I would call myself a Particular Baptist believing in TULIP, but that does not mean that I hold to all of their doctrines.

Blackaby of the Experiencing God fame (or infamous) mentioned of planting churches in Canada. I think out West, possibly Canada, the SBC churches do not use SB in its name or promotional material. Isn't Rick Warren's church a SBC, Saddleback Community (or whatever).

[color:"blue"]I am Canadian and as far as I am aware of (though I could be wrong) there are no SBC Churches in Canada.

Not only do they have over 150 churches they have their own convention: CCSB and a Seminary!

And these are Reformed Baptist Churches (only 1 SBC, but there may be more):

British Columbia, Canada

Gateway Baptist Church
13175 107 ave
Surrey V3T-2G2
Phone: 604-951-4293
Church affiliation: Southern Baptist Convention
Church confession: None
Contact: Rick Chase, Senior Pastor
Description: gateway has struggled over the past three years before I came to pastor here in October 2002. I am reformed, however, the congregation is weak on their theology and are largely the product of pragmatism and the church growth movement. We are currently about 40 people meeting on Sundays in our church building that was built by Texas missionaries in the 1980's. I am praying and preaching towards a reformation here in Surrey.

CANADA

Sovereign Grace Baptist Church
8134 Hyde Street
Mission, British Columbia V2V 5W1
Phone: 604-820-3448
Church affiliation: Other
Church confession: 1st London Baptist Confession (1644/1646)
Contact: Darryl Savage, Pastor
Description: We believe the Bible is the fully inspired, inerrant Word of God to men made in His image. Here is a standard that is fixed and reliable, a bedrock of certainty in a world marred by confusion and conflict. The darkness and superstition of the middle ages was broken by a movement of God's Spirit called the Reformation. Men like Martin Luther and John Calvin searched the Scriptures, and we seek to follow their example. We Hold to the major principles of the Reformation, including Sola Scriptura - The Bible alone is our infallible source of truth Sola Gratia - Men can be delivered from their sins by grace alone, not by any works which they can do in their own power. Sola Fide - The instrument by which sinful men receive God's grace is by faith alone, not some combination of faith plus works. Sola Christus - God's grace is given to us in Christ alone, not through angels, saints, or any church ceremonies.

Canada

2202 Rt 560
Lakeville, New Brunswick E7K 1W8
Phone:
Church affiliation: Other
Church confession: 2nd London Baptist Confession (1689)
Contact: Rev Rory M Lennox, Elder/Pastor
Description: In 1980 this congregation was formed in order to provide a place of worship for people in the area who acknowledged the full Sovereignty of God in the lives of men. The members have taken this stand in the face of many difficulties and can report that God is gracious to those who are obedient to His command.

Trinity Baptist Church
