Praise God! On Sunday morning, a girl in my youth group got saved!!!!! Her name is Jessica and she is 16 years old. Please pray for her in her new life.

I also have a question though.

I am looking for a devotional book or some such thing to get her for Christmas and to celebrate her new life. But I am afraid to get her something that she won't be able to understand. I know she needs to be challenged. But I don't want to get her something that is beyond where she is at, if you know what I am saying. Anyone have any suggestions? I am thinking maybe Pierced By the Word by John Piper (It's a 31 day devo kinda thing with some of his FreshWords articles in it) or The Dangerous Duty of Delight by the same author (Basically a shorter and more simplified version of Desiring God.) But does anyone else have any suggestions that would be better suited for a 16 year old girl who just got saved? The typical youth devotionals are pretty whack if you ask me.

True godliness is a sincere feeling which loves God as Father as much as it fears and reverences Him as Lord, embraces His righteousness, and dreads offending Him worse than death~ Calvin

How about that ol' classic, "My Utmost for His Highest" by Oswald Chambers? I read that several years in a row (maybe 5 or 6) and I learned something everytime I went through it. I post the daily devotionals on my old church's website and I plan on posting Chambers next year.

When I was a brand new Christian, my grandma gave me her threadbare copy of "Streams in the Desert". I forget the author (a woman, last name started with a C. . .) I don't remember how theologically sound it was, but it fit the bill for a young girl. I later passed my grandmother's copy on to a dear family friend who was going through a horrible, horrible time in her life. She has since passed it on to someone else.

Great news, indeed. As for the book, I really can't think of one. I'm sure others will have some good ideas.

Ron

Go Purdue! So guess at it alre...
Now that IS great news!

You might look for something by Elizabeth Elliot. All her books are good, and she has a way of explaining things that makes them a delight to women and full of truth without being too LONG or technical. It might be a nice place to start. I've been "warming up" for my devotions each morning in the past fall by reading her recent book, Keep a Quiet Heart.

My personal preference for new believers (assuming she is genuinely converted??) is J.I. Packer's Knowing God. The OLD edition is preferable to the new one which uses the NIV to reference Bible texts. There is also a study guide that you can get with it, which would make doing a study together with someone else or even a group a possibility. After all, we ARE called to "make disciples" and not just "get people saved"! wink

Kalled2Preach,
I wanted to mention J. C. Ryle's Daily Readings. There are selections from the Matthew, Mark and Luke in the morning reading, and the evening reading is from the Gospel of John. He is so good and practical and very easy to understand and would be good for either a new Christian or an older one. My husband got it last year and loved it. I have the 4 gospel book set that the daily readings are taken from and I have loved them. http://www.TrinityBookService.org

Trinity has it now for 13.95 in hardcover, which is a great deal! It was hard to find it on their site so will include the link. http://www.trinitybookservice.org/nov03p4.html

Susan

Kalled2Preach,

Peter Jefferey has quite a few good books that provide introductions to Reformed doctrine and life. He is a very easy read for new believers and tends to put things in easy study formats. I would definitely check out his books at Cumberland Valley Bible Book Service

Warm regards,

~Jason
