It is derived from 4 consonants (with no vowels), thus making it unpronounceable. It is called the "Tetragrammaton". For the sake of bing able to pronounce that four-letter word 3 vowels have been added. Technically, it is the verb "to be", which is rightly translated, I AM (cf. Ex. 3:14).
