Yes, Whitefield died before Wesley, but this question was allegedly asked of Whitefield during the time that he and Wesley were in the midst of their "debates".

Interesting are the Search results on Google here:

It is also interesting to note the websites which have the quote where Wesley said this about Whitefield. They are nearly all Arminian/semi-Pelagian. What I will do later, D.v. is see if I can locate this statement in one of the biographies I have of Whitefield and/or his Journals.
