Our consciences don't all work the same way. For instance, it is accepted as morally necessary in some tribal cultures of the Middle East for men to murder women in the family who have sex outside of marriage, and in some cases, who have been raped. Does your conscience tell you that this is hunky-dory?

The simple fact of the matter is that if God didn't exist, there would be no basis at all for distinguishing between good and evil. Each man would decide for himself, and in that case there can be no objective standard.
