Since your question is theoretical, my response is understanding that you are merely throwing out a "what if" question.

I would say that dating a pagan would be worse. I find that Papists deficiencies are their lack of knowledge of the Bible. They claim to love Jesus, but they don't understand who Jesus is, and they especially don't understand His one-time sacrifice for the sins of man. We have a huge mission field in the world of the Roman Catholics, but folks like JI Packer don't think we SHOULD evangelize since they are brothers anyway! (ooops, off topic, sorry). Back on topic, most Romanists have never heard the true gospel. I was born and raised a Romanist, and I did not hear the true gospel until I was in my late 20's...and I stumbled across it (we all know that the Holy Spirit caused me to pick up that book at the Tampa airport when I was on that 10 hour layover). But they do hear Scripture every time they enter into a church....more Scripture, in fact, than most Protestants hear! Also, the liturgy itself is based upon Scripture....at least the words are (not the practices themselves, mind you!).

A pagan hates Jesus, the Biblical Jesus, the Papist Jesus, the secular Jesus. The pagan would be worse, much worse. This does not mean that the pagan has no hope, because he does. In fact, to muddy the waters further, many Romanists are simply pagan.

Steve Cross
