I have just been reading John 14, and wanted to share a thought with others here. When Christ says,
"Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid," (Joh 14:27)
I have always thought of this as that peace with God which He purchased for us with His own blood, and so it is.
But what struck me this morning are the words "My peace." Matthew Henry says, "When Christ was about to leave the world He made His will. His soul He committed to His Father; His body He bequeathed to Joseph, to be decently interred; His clothes fell to the soldiers; His mother He left to the care of John: but what should He leave to His poor disciples, that had left all for Him? Silver and gold He had none; but He left them that which was infinitely better, His peace." Therefore, HIS PEACE, that peace which He displayed in every situation, is surely what has been left to us. I had not really appreciated the implication of this until now. What do others think?

Your meditations on John 14 reminded me of the passage in Philipians:

Quote
Philipians 4:7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. 9 What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.

The peace of God will guard our hearts and minds and the God of peace will be with us.

Trust the past to God's mercy, the present to God's love and the future to God's providence." - St. Augustine

"Peace" was a common Hebrew salutation used in greeting and farewell. Jesus gives it new meaning. Jesus' peace is true reconciliation with God, purchased with His death.

There must first be peace with God through the sacrifice of Christ then inward peace can follow and then there can be peace between men which is part of the purpose for which Christ died. The Christian must be active to promote it so harmony can exist in the church. Peace comes as a result of God's gift and is a legacy Jesus left to His heirs.
