I chose Spurgeon. I chose him because I have never ever ever read anyone else that makes me want the very same Jesus he loved and served, like his sermons do. When I read his stuff, I am always very convicted, but convinced of Jesus love for me, and for us- the body of Christ. I have not seen such a balance anywhere else.
I think it's really impossible to chose the best "preacher" without actually hearing a man stand before the people of God and preach the Word, however, I chose Robert Murray M'Cheyenne. I chose him because I have read quite a bit from him and it seems--through his writings-- that he was theologically sound, willing to confront the issues of sin, clear with his gospel presentation, consistant in bringing everything around to Christ, and kind hearted in his dealings with people.
Trust the past to God's mercy, the present to God's love and the future to God's providence." - St. Augustine Hiraeth
I picked Mccheyne because of the fervency of his preaching even though he only lived to the age of 29. Charles Spurgeon for the depth of his preaching. He also stood up against the errors of his day. Andrew Fuller for standing up against the hypercalvinism that was growing in England during his lifetime. Andrew Payson was one of the great American preachers of the early 1800's. John Piper is an excellent preacher now.
I chose: - McCheyne due to his experimental preaching of Christ and the urgency of sinners to known Him as their Redeemer. - Spurgeon for his eloquence and boldness to preach the truth. - Lloyd-Jones for his ability to apply the truth of Scripture to both his congregation and his contemporaries. - Nettleton for his fervor in evangelizing the heathen at no little cost to himself. - Ryle also for his incredible ability expound and then to apply the whole counsel of God in an endearing and enduring manner.
I thought we were just s'posed to pick one! LOL.. I think I might want to read M'Cheyne though! I have heard his name, but have not read anything that I can remember... I'm glad I read this thread
Go here: Notable Sermons, and scroll down 4 items and you will see a number of McCheyne's sermons to read.
I picked John Murray.... I like Scottish Presbyterian preachers.
Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. - Galatians 2:16
