The group of churches I attend shun contemporary christian music. Lately I have been doing a little reading on that. That is how I found this site. I will agree that some of that stuff that is out there is for lack of a better word, cheap. Some of the artists do not even come close to glorifying God with there music. Some of that has to do with lack of talent and or lack of singing from a committed heart. But I have heard a few songs that really stirred my heart. Songs with lyrics like(forgive me if I do not get these lyrics exactly right.) "this is what it feels like to be held when it all falls apart." Or there was another song that spoke of a ma reminding himself when he woke up and was not feeling so chipper that is was a moment for worship. Some of these songs stir me to worship. Although I do not care for a certain artist that did version of "I have decided." That song was on of the things that motivated me to quit being just a good religious joe and be sincerely committed to Christ They remind me why I love God so much and I have a problem just lumping them in with other music that is really is about a spiritual as pouring salt on a slug.

I have read some of the posts on this thread. I noticed that one of the arguments against certain styles of music is the beat motivates you in a certain way. I will agree that music does set a mood. Some music does convey a very worldly attitude. Rap and rock and roll are the two most obvious culprits. But is that because we have been exposed to the worldly stuff before being used in services. Just because it "makes me want to dance" does not seem to be a solid reason for shunning that style of music. If the reason is because it motivates the flesh what else can fall into that category. What about a kiss or other intimate contact? I know that might be a real stretch but there is nothing really spiritual that and that is not forbidden if the biblical guidelines are followed.

I have been in church services that did not have very much in the way of instruments. It does make a HUGE difference in setting the mood for the service. As long as things are done in taste and do not draw attention away from the focus of worshiping God so what if the people get excited? I know the preaching is what saves and the teaching helps us to grow but why not enhance the worship by getting the people a little motivated during the singing part of the service. Why would it be wrong to listen to music that does turn your heart and mind toward thinking about God's goodness and faithfulness to all of us.

I apologize for the length of this entry but I guess I just needed to get it out "on paper" so to speak. I would appreciate your comments. Thank you.
