Hey everyone,

I've written an article on a new forum I'm playing around with.

Being "Filled" with the Spirit

Anyone encouraged to stop on by, please do so and let me know what your thoughts are on this topic.

In His grace,

Dave

Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. - Galatians 2:16

It's very comon for people who may never have seen what Pentecostalism actually teaches and practices to assign at least nominal validity to it. After all, the Bible does say "desire to prophesy and do not forbid to speak with tongues (1st Corinthians 14:39)."

So sincere efforts to prophesy and/or apply any of the other charismata flow from the idea that they are at least a possible result of being filled with the Spirit (or in some Pentecostal and Charismatic circles - absolutely required of those who claim to be filled; the evidence of infilling of the Spirit.

When we don't understand the nature and purpose of the gifts, we tend to fill in the blanks with our own expectations or what we have seen and heard others do.

The gifts of the Spirit as they were in the Bible were nothing like the what is practiced today. I suggest a browse through the ExCharisma forum here on the Highway, as well as the articles on the Charismatic movement.

Dave,

Groovy VW Bus, but...

When Paul says "do not be drunk with wine...but be filled with the Spirit" in Ephesians 5:18 , he is contrasting two controlling influences. When a person is drunk, they are controlled by the alcohol, they are under the influence of it. When a person is "filled with the Spirit" they are under control of the Spirit. Paul is saying, do not be controlled by wine, but be controlled by the Spirit.

The overall context of this part of Ephesians 5:1-21 is how to "walk", or how to behave in a godly manner; walk in love (5:1), walk as children of light (5:8), etc. In these passages Paul contrasts godly behavior with ungodly behavior - the "unfruitful works of darkness" (5:11).

When Paul gets to 5:18 he contrasts drunken orgies that were commonly associated with pagan worship, with Spirit-filled worship, "psalms and hymns and spiritual songs" etc. In both cases, there is a controlling influence; wine in one case, and the Holy Spirit in the other. Singing songs, corporate worship, and fellowship are an example of the results of being filled with the Spirit, but Paul is not saying that they are the means of being filled with the Spirit.

Therefore, to be "filled with the Spirit" means to live under the influence of the Spirit, by letting the Word of God control us, living in purity, confessing and repenting of sin, dying to self, surrendering to God. In essence, we are filled with the Spirit when we are walking in the Spirit and not walking in the flesh. Being filled with the Spirit results in God's power working through us, as the examples below show:

In Acts 2:4 on the Day of Pentecost, being filled with the Spirit (under the Spirit's control) led to speaking in tongues. In Acts 4:8, being filled with the Spirit caused Peter to preach to the crowd. In Acts 4:31 it resulted in hte disciples speaking the Word of God with boldness. In Acts 6:3 they chose seven men who were "full of the Spirit" which meant that the Spirit's control over them was evident by their obedience.

As for tongues and other charismatic gifts, these gifts no longer serve a purpose and I've seen no evidence that they still exist today. What goes on in pentecostal circles is something entirely different (in my humble opinion.)

In Christ - Jim
