John listening to some of the speakers I had heard something similar that one of those recent graduates would start preaching on the doctrines taught in the New Hampshire Confession when the Matriarch of the church came up and told him she didn't believe that. (This being the confession of faith that the church claimed it held to) When he confronted her with the truth taught in the scriptures that was enumerated by the confession she left the church and started a smear campaign. When it was found that he held to the doctrines of grace he was ejected from the church. And this was a pastor who was evangelistic, went visiting door to door etc... But the people wouldn't stand for the truth.

I find this thread of special interest because my current pastor is one of those Southern grads (or at least he will be when he finishes his theisis.). It is one of his greatest struggles not to alienate those with the congrgation who are not 'there yet' while being faithful to teach the word of God. This is not easy task since the very meantion of words like Calvinism cause some to become overly engergized and defensive. I have never understood why?
BTW I have been a SBC member my entire christian life and according to my dearest friend I have be a closet calvinist for most of that time... coming out was been a long painful and joyous journey. Having a pastor who gives me links to sites like the highway has been helpful. Honestly the average SBC memeber has no idea what they are. I attended what was at the time considered to be one of the more conservative of the state SBC colleges and until recently (the last 2 years and I am 15 years out of college) I was unsettled about most of the doctines of grace. The sad impplication of this is that most SBC memebers are so ill-informed that they will not see the importance of the debate.
I get the impression that there are not many SBC members on this forum. I could <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/flee.gif" alt="" /> or <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/surrender.gif" alt="" /> or maybe I'll just <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/bow.gif" alt="" /> to all the wisdom of this place.

Well I don't know how many members of the forum are actual members of the SBC, I know I am not nor will I ever be as there are too many issues regarding "key doctrines" that they hold that I regard as unbiblical. But being a member of the SBC doesn't make you a pariah around here. There is no denominational requirement.

Is there really anyone who has it all right? I mean at least where I am there is a willingness to address some issues.
I find it assuming that some here are more aware of the 'politics' of the sbc than most of its members. I really think that my particular congregation would be unaware except for the newly introducted influence from Southern.

I have to admit that I don't belong to the SBC, my interest in it is mainly I am a big fan of Founders ministries.

Nope the only Church that will really have it right is the that exists after the new heavens and earth. Now with that said, and I hope agreed to, let me state that there are doctrines that I won't compromise on; some that mainstream SBC churches hold as wrong. Even in the building bridges conference one of the foremost Professors at Southwestern (I think) named these doctrines as errors to be repudiated and I am not speaking of soteriology. Followed by a chorus of hearty amens. Right then I knew I couldn't ever be a member unless I had a fundamental reversal of everything I have learned regarding Reformed Theology. And that's about all I have to say on that subject.
