I was reading an old post regarding Seventh Day Adventists and had a question for the forum. What are your thoughts on churches that rent the facilities of Seventh Day Adventist churches? Since Seventh Day Adventists don't worship on the Lord's Day, many churches (including reformed, I know of two) will rent their building on Sundays for worship. Does the exhortation from Paul to "...be ye separate..." apply here? Also, part of the tithes and offerings of church members are going to the Seventh Day Adventist Church. Is that right? What say ye?

It would be a good arrangement for a church plant that is meeting in a storefront. The church would have facilities conducive for worship services. I don't see it as being unequalled yoke.

Why? Do you think so? Is it any difference than renting from a pagan school district or from any business.

My pastor believes there is a difference. He is vehemently against it. Basically, he argues that there is a big difference between renting, buying property, goods and services from unbelievers and pagans (we all do it during our daily course of business) versus giving your tithe knowing that it (or a portion of it) is going into the treasury of a cult or heretical sect. He makes a fairly convincing argument. Personally this is something I've never given any deep thought or study to, so I'm curious what others think about it.

Couple of things. First, it is nice that your Pastor has convictions in the area of stewardship, but he is a little naive in its application.

A portion of our tithes may go to the secular government if you are tithing on your net, which I do not think one should do. Another point regarding its naivety is that paying your utility bill goes to pagan companies. There are others.

Christians are not to be influence by the world, but we are in the world, so we cannot separate ourselves from it.

Dear John,
Quote
I don't think you meant to type:
if you are tithing on your grass, which I think one should do

So if the Pharisees tithed on their dill and mint and cummin, I guess I need to bring in a bag of trimmings whenever I mow the lawn!

Paul,

That whole argument is false. I went back and corrected it. My brain must have not awoken this morning.
