My pastor is what the SBC now calls bivocational. He tends his flock on Wednesdays and Sundays and teaches a fifth grade class on all of the weekdays.
He related this story to our congregation this past Sunday morning.Last week during a history lesson one of the kids mentioned the bible while speaking of a historical event.Pastor Burke was able to guide the conversation to the following two questions:1-How many of you go to church at least part of the time? The answer was 90% which seems quite high.2-How many of you can tell me what was unique about the birth of Jesus? Only three,(10%)had the right answer. After giving the rest of the class a hint that the answer had to do with his father and mother none could answer that Jesus was born of a virgin. Most of them said that they know what it means but they had never heard that before.
If nine out of ten really do attend church at least some of the time it begs the question, what are they hearing? This seems to be a sad indictment not only of the churches but also of the parents.
