I came across this when reading Sproul's Tabletalk magazine. When we speak of the "Father is begotten, the son is eternally begotten of the Father, and the Spirit eternally proceeds from the Father and the Son."
The use of the word proceed for the Spirit is new to me. I mean I have never heard it said that way. Why proceed and not begotten?
Let's go back to Trinity 101 - how do we understand begotten and proceed, and why is it important to see the Three as a procession instead of begotten at the same moment. I realize that God is outside of the way we view time so procession may have a different connotation than the way we normally understand it.

John, 1. Me thinks you mistyped the quote from Table Talk as it should read, "Father is NOT begotten,...".  2. There are several excellent articles on The Highway main website that deal with this issue which you can reference here: The Doctrine of God. 3. Here's a quote from G.H. Kersten: The personal attribute of the Holy Spirit is that He proceeds from the Father and from the Son. Since it is far beyond the comprehension of man, the distinction between the generation of the Son and the procession of the Holy Spirit cannot be defined. God’s Word, however, indicates a difference by ascribing the generation of the Son to the Father, (Ps. 2:7) and the procession of the Holy Spirit to the Father and the Son. “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in My name, He shall teach you all things.” (John 14:26) “But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth.” (John 15:26)
The Father sends the Holy Spirit in the name of the Son, and the Son sends Him from the Father. Father and Son are one in sending the Holy Spirit, because the Spirit proceeds from both. Christ also said that the Holy Spirit “shall receive of mine, and shall show it unto you.” (John 16:14) “Howbeit when He, the Spirit of truth is come, ... He shall not speak of Himself, but whatsoever He shall hear, that shall He speak. He shall glorify Me, for He shall receive of mine.” (John 16:13,14)
Because the Holy Spirit also proceeds from the Son, He is called the Spirit of Christ and the Spirit of the Son. “Now if any have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of His.” (Rom. 8:9) “God hath sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, Abba, Father”. (Gal. 4:6)
