Sin separates us from God. But different sins are mentioned and the result of those sins seems to vary (at least in this life). I'm not sure I understand.

God gave some over to a reprobate mind. But a totally depraved person is already under the power of Satan and has a reprobate mind, does he not?

10But into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you not, go your ways out into the streets of the same, and say, 11Even the very dust of your city, which cleaveth on us, we do wipe off against you: notwithstanding be ye sure of this, that the kingdom of God is come nigh unto you. 12But I say unto you, that it shall be more tolerable in that day for Sodom, than for that city.
Luke 10

Jesus answered him, ‘You would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given to you from above. Therefore he who delivered me over to you has the greater sin’
John 19:11

???

Can someone explain? Thanks.

There are "degrees of sin" amongst men. Some sins are more heinous than others, e.g., murder, adultery, homosexuality, etc. which demand greater punishment. But, in the judgment of God, all sins are worthy of eternal damnation and punishment. In other words, there are not various "levels" of punishment in Hell.

Quote
Matthew 5:18-20 (ASV) "For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass away from the law, till all things be accomplished. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I say unto you, that except your righteousness shall exceed [the righteousness] of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no wise enter into the kingdom of heaven."

Galatians 3:10 (ASV) "For as many as are of the works of the law are under a curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one who continueth not in all things that are written in the book of the law, to do them."

James 2:8-11 (ASV) "Howbeit if ye fulfil the royal law, according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself, ye do well: but if ye have respect of persons, ye commit sin, being convicted by the law as transgressors. For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one [point], he is become guilty of all. For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou dost not commit adultery, but killest, thou art become a transgressor of the law."

As I recall, there are two degrees. Forgivable and Unforgivable

1. Forgivable sins are any conscience acts that are not driven by faith in Christ:

Rom 14:23 "But he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and whatever is not from faith is sin." NASU

2. The one unforgivalbe sin is blasphemy against the Spirit

Matt 12:31-32 "Therefore I say to you, any sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven people, but blasphemy against the Spirit shall not be forgiven. 32 "Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man, it shall be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come."
NASU

John 19:11 Jesus talks of the "greater" sin. Doesn't that refer to a degree of sin?

Yes, as I wrote above, there are degrees of sin among men, e.g., jaywalking vs. murder. The situation in John 19:11 is a comparison between Pilate, a truly despicable and sinful man and Caiaphas, the High Priest. In the case of Pilate, he had the delegated authority from God to make a judgment in the case of Christ due to the position he held in the established government. But in the case of Caiaphas, he had no authority from God to condemn Christ as a blasphemer and sinner, especially given that he had knowledge of the Scriptures. He did this on his own. Thus, his sin was far worse than Pilate's sin. (cf. Matt 11:22-24; Lk 12:47,48) Yet again, even the slightest deviation or omission of God's holy law is worthy of eternal punishment.

Lynda,
Read Thomas Watson's "Degrees of Sin", which can be found in the Article of the Month archives. He says among other things ,the following:To sin presumptuously, is to sin against convictions and illuminations, or an enlightened conscience. ‘They are of those that rebel against the light.’ Job 24:13. Conscience, like the cherubim, stands with a flaming sword in its hand to deter the sinner; and yet he will sin. Did not Pilate sin against conviction, and with a high hand, in condemning Christ? He knew that for envy the Jews had delivered him. Matt 27:18. He confessed he ‘found no fault in him.’ Luke 23:14. His own wife sent to him saying, ‘Have nothing to do with that just man.’ Matt 27:19. Yet for all this, he gave the sentence of death against Christ. He sinned presumptuously, against an enlightened conscience. To sin ignorantly does something to extenuate and pare off the guilt. ‘If I had not come and spoken unto them, they had not had sin,’ that is, their sin had been less. John 15:22. But to sin against illuminations and convictions enhances men’s sins. These sins make deep wounds in the soul; other sins fetch blood; they are a stab at the heart.
