Anyone have any recommendations on a commentary for 1st corinthians, preferably from a cessationist point of view. I was going to purchase Hodge's, since I trust him and he is one my favorite authors. Just wondering if there were additional commentaries that are excellent.

thanks,
Carlos

Carlos,

Aside from Hodge, I haven't come across any that I would call "great", but there are a couple that I have used that are worth considering nonetheless.
[*]Commentary on the First Epistle to the Corinthians by F.W. Grosheide (Eerdmans)[*]The Interpretation of I and II Corinthians by R.C.H. Lenski (Augsburg Publishing House) Lenski is a conservative Lutheran that has written a series of commentaries on the N.T. He includes a good amount of Greek in them but for someone who hasn't studied Greek, it is still usable. He does have his "weak" points, e.g., baptismal regeneration and election, etc., but knowing these things ahead of time, the student can still benefit from his insightful comments.[*]Calvin's Commentary on I & II Corinthians by John Calvin is of course always worth considering as well.[/LIST]In His Grace,

Carlos,
Gordon Fee is not a cessationalist, but his commentary is excellent for the most part. The one place you would need to be discerning is chapters 12-14. Also, I understand Anthony Theislton(sp?) has a rather massive commentary on 1 Corinthians as well. I have not used it, but I see it at our bookstore. Some folks I know liked it. Also, John MacArthur's commentary is top notch as well. It is actually based upon sermons, so each chapter is nicely outlined. (I disagree with his view that tongues was some sort of pagan language thing). Last, if you need a good work on the gift chapters of 12-14, pick up DA Carson's work on that subject, as well as Robert Thomas's "spiritual gifts." Both men come from two separate angles, but they are worth the read. Carson is friendly to charismatics, but not completely supportive; and Thomas is a full cessationalist.

Fred

I have found that Gordon Clark's commentary on 1st Corinthians is an excellent supplement to Hodge's commentary.
Steve

Thanks brothers for the info. I decided to go with Grosheide and Thielson commentaries, plus the two works on 1 cor 12-14 by carson and thomas.

Carlos
