If we would only heed what nature teaches us we would enjoy the happiest state that humans could desire. For God has created all of us in his own image, so that we have only to look at our neighbour to see ourselves. We are one flesh. And although appearances and attitudes are very different, it is impossible to efface the unity which God has conferred on us. If only that were firmly etched in our minds, we would all be living at peace with each other, in a kind of earthly paradise.

Although this sermon by John Calvin is one of the finest examples of the pastoral spirit of the man, it isn't one which will be gladly received by many, IMHO. And why is that? Because this is one of those sermons which is aimed directly at one's heart and if it is God's pleasure to do so, it will penetrate deep into that heart and bring pain; the pain of conviction. But as it is generally true, where God brings conviction, He also grants repentance from which a resultant marvelous change occurs whereby the person is transformed a little more into the beautiful image of the Lord Christ.

May this be true of everyone who reads this sermon.
