SemperReformanda,
It is generally known that John Robbins can be a very caustic individual when he writes. And because of this he has rightly earned the many criticisms which have been voiced in this regard. HOWEVER, ignoring his demeanor, his criticisms are often justified and should be given serious consideration. In this article, which you linked to, he takes offense to TableTalk's (whoever is responsible for it) "Devotional" concerning the passage in Hebrews and more specifically to the author's view concerning the Covenant spoken of in that text. What the author believes on this issue isn't entirely clear, IMHO, but what is clear to me is that it could easily be construed as that which is being taught by the Auburnites and now many others, aka: NeoLegalism, NPP, etc.
I have to agree with Robbins in that TableTalk should have issued a correction, at least, for their statement that Peter was the head of the Church. And now this article in the February 2004 issue gives rise to another and more serious problem. Where is Ligonier Ministries going these days? Has it lost its first love and gotten on to one of those "slippery slopes" that leads to apostasy? If so, how far will it slide? The difficulty for most people, I suspect, is the reverence/respect they hold for Dr. R.C. Sproul, Sr. There can be no doubt that he has been one of the most influential theologians and speakers over the past 40+ years, and one who I too admire. But how much involvement does R.C. have nowadays with Ligonier Ministries? Has he basically handed it over to others? Well, there are lots of questions that could be asked. But needless to say, the criticism(s) which people like John Robbins have launched need to be taken seriously. People, organizations and churches do change. We shouldn't rest on what "was", but rather we should be evaluating those things which are here and now.
In His Grace,
simul iustus et peccator
