Dear Fellow Saints & Friends:

What do you believe the biblical and reformed position is for where single adult daughters should live?
I have seen an increase in the reformed camp that adult single daughters should remain at home under the headship of the father if and until the Lord is pleased to send them a husband. Some verses I have seen used are those dealing with man leaving his father and mother and cleaving to his wife, the father giving the daughter in marriage in 1Cor. 7, the woman being the weaker vessel in 1Pet. 3, and of course the headship passages of the father and husband. Do you agree with this position and the using of these passages of Holy Writ to support it? If not, why? And if you do, do you have other verses to support this view? Thank you

Brother Bret

I'm waiting for the others to answer because I myself am a single 23-year-old-daughter. I believe I have the "gift of celibacy," as laid out in 1 Corinthians 7, and I am learning from my church, Christian authors, and my own reading of the Scriptures. I look forward to moving out of my parents house, since I feel I will be better able to devote my time to God in that situation. I know if I had strong Christian parents, I would beless willing to move out. I know my own situation is not the norm.

True godliness is a sincere feeling which loves God as Father as much as it fears and reverences Him as Lord, embraces His righteousness, and dreads offending Him worse than death~ Calvin

Hi Brother Bret

Personally, I don't feel there is anything wrong with a daughter moving away from her parent’s house before being married.
In fact our oldest daughter went off the university this past September. For one thing in our particular case, we live in a small city and she couldn't become what she wants to be (a speech pathologist), if she stayed here.
So unless someone thinks it isn't biblical for young women to go to university, in our case anyway she didn't have much choice in the matter.

Tom

Hey Brother!

I must confess that when I read your question, the first thing that popped up in my little pea-brain was the term "hyper-covenantalism"! I can't say if Doug Wilson teaches this type of thing, i.e., a woman should either live under the authority of her father or be married, but it sure smacks of what he has written in other places concerning "covenant" and the family structure, which I find mostly unbiblical and contrived. Enough said!

In His Grace,

As the father of two adult daughters (24 and 19 respectively) who currently live at home I see no problem with them being under my headship when it comes to rules of my house, and where we go to church (although I will admit if they wanted to go somewhere else and gave a good reason for it I would be inclined to say yes.). And at the same time if they wish to leave the house and live on their own I see no problem with that either. I believe the main issue is whether you have trained them up as godly women. If they are then I don't see them going out and living an immoral lifestyle.

However, let me say that as a father I also still hold to the idea that if despite my training they did start living in debauchery (and frankly I find it very hard to think they would) I have the duty to tell them that they are wrong and even get the church involved in it.

Just my 2 cents
